I firstly watched it on Netflix during the first lockdown。 Wasn't emotionally ready for it to finish as I was so involved。 I saw there was a book, probably the original b4 the tv series。 Fell in love with it。 Couldn't put it down。 I'm a grown adult but hooked on what would be aimed at teenagers。 I firstly watched it on Netflix during the first lockdown。 Wasn't emotionally ready for it to finish as I was so involved。 I saw there was a book, probably the original b4 the tv series。 Fell in love with it。 Couldn't put it down。 I'm a grown adult but hooked on what would be aimed at teenagers。 。。。more

Thirteen Reason Why By Jay Asher: 1/5A friend of mine talked to me about this book; I am not a fan of YA books but, I decided to give it a chance。I was interested because it touches on topics on mental health。 In the end, I was unsatisfied with how the author approached these ideas。

So I decided to read this book because the show was quite famous when it came out。 But seriously I am happy I didn't waste my time on the show。 I didn't like the book。 I didn't like the idea of justifying suicide。 Suicide is and can never be justified no Matter how hard life gets。 Plus most of her reasons were mere bullshit。 I think nobody ever taught her the words 'sharing your thoughts' or 'seeking psychiatric help'。 Instead of glorifying suicide, it would have been better if author had tried So I decided to read this book because the show was quite famous when it came out。 But seriously I am happy I didn't waste my time on the show。 I didn't like the book。 I didn't like the idea of justifying suicide。 Suicide is and can never be justified no Matter how hard life gets。 Plus most of her reasons were mere bullshit。 I think nobody ever taught her the words 'sharing your thoughts' or 'seeking psychiatric help'。 Instead of glorifying suicide, it would have been better if author had tried to put some thoughts on mental health。 Because, o man, Hannah did need some serious help。 You can't just make every thing others do about yourself。 。。。more

I'm not sure why so many people praise this book, but I didn't really enjoy the plot。 I also think this book is mislabeled as a thriller when it isn't--though I can see the author's attempts to make it dramatic。 Overall, I don't feel emotionally attached to the characters and don't have strong feelings toward this novel (either in favor or against it), so 2/5 stars are fitting。 I'm not sure why so many people praise this book, but I didn't really enjoy the plot。 I also think this book is mislabeled as a thriller when it isn't--though I can see the author's attempts to make it dramatic。 Overall, I don't feel emotionally attached to the characters and don't have strong feelings toward this novel (either in favor or against it), so 2/5 stars are fitting。 。。。more

13 Reasons Why, a book deliberately given to me by someone who means the world to me。 This book, while easily half the size of my usual reads lately, hit me with more emotional weight and pain than any of them。Hannah Baker is someone you could call an unreliable narrator, but that's what works。 Everything is told from her experience and perspective, which forces us into a first person view of everything she has had to face and deal with。 Multiple times throughout the book I had to remind myself 13 Reasons Why, a book deliberately given to me by someone who means the world to me。 This book, while easily half the size of my usual reads lately, hit me with more emotional weight and pain than any of them。Hannah Baker is someone you could call an unreliable narrator, but that's what works。 Everything is told from her experience and perspective, which forces us into a first person view of everything she has had to face and deal with。 Multiple times throughout the book I had to remind myself that Hannah was dead, that the voice on the tapes are all that remains of her personality。Clay Jensen shows the true process of grief in his experience with Hannah's shoebox of tapes and their contents。 I believe that Clay shows the emotion and weight of guilt by anyone who loses someone to suicide。 Everything from his reactions to Hannah's voice as well as the contents of the tapes are harrowing。I want to make this clear though, this book DOES NOT glamourise suicide at all, and I feel that if that's the main message you take away from the book, then you're missing the proverbial STOP sign。 The 13 Reasons all depict some sort of trauma or abuse that Hannah experiences throughout her time at the school, and all of them are things that young girls still experience。I started to hear Hannah's voice as somebody very close to me。 This rocked me to my core and caused the emotional aspects to hit deeper, harder and more frequent with every page turn。The reality of the situations in the book, from the rumours surrounding Hannah, to Mr Porters reaction seems like something straight from real life。Jay Asher, you are both an amazing and terrible author, and I dont think I'll be recovered from reading this book for a few days。5/5 。。。more

This one is a tough review。 It's a tough novel。 On the one hand, yes, it's compelling。 It's a fast-paced page-turner and an interesting story in many ways。 Like many teenagers, Hannah witnesses some terrible events and wants to expose them。 She feels an immense amount of angst about what happens to her and others in high school。 She wants justice (although it feels a lot more like revenge) for the people who made her feel left out as a new kid。 Who started rumors about her and try to cast her as This one is a tough review。 It's a tough novel。 On the one hand, yes, it's compelling。 It's a fast-paced page-turner and an interesting story in many ways。 Like many teenagers, Hannah witnesses some terrible events and wants to expose them。 She feels an immense amount of angst about what happens to her and others in high school。 She wants justice (although it feels a lot more like revenge) for the people who made her feel left out as a new kid。 Who started rumors about her and try to cast her as a slut。 Who victimized her and laughed at her for so many reasons。 Relatable? Absolutely。 I have always been grateful that I'd graduated high school by the time photos were easily sharable and sext-able, and I can absolutely believe that these shitty actions could trigger suicidal thoughts, especially for a kid like Hannah who is obviously anxious about getting it right in a new town。But unlike most teenagers, she achieves her goals by committing suicide and sending tapes to her "reasons。" She completes her suicide。 She exposes rape and stalking from beyond the grave。 And this is where this book turns into dangerous fantasy for me。 Many teenagers think "things could be better if I killed myself。。。 then those kids would understand what they did" but life doesn't work out this way because when you die, you're dead。 There is a crushing emptiness that replaces a person's life, and a million questions that can no longer be answered。 But that's not true for Hannah。 Hannah's death lets her live out her fantasies。 Her voice on the tapes becomes like a secondary narrator, an omniscient presence who gets to expose Important Truths。I'm with the educators who worry about this book。 I see why it was popular, and why it still is。 But this is a fantasy novel that contains a suicide, not a realistic actual discussion of teen mental health。 Y'all, if you're reading this review and feeling like you relate to Hannah: Say something。 Call a suicide hotline。 Google a therapist。 If you have students who love this novel, talk to them about it。 。。。more

I agree with the other 1 star reviews, I can't frame my own very well but I'll try。 Not a very enjoyable book to read。 Everyone's character is shitty, the 1 star is only for the owner of Rosie's who seemed like the nicest from the entire book, and he had like 2 lines :/I think the narrative style was quite satisfying and brought the little pieces together nicely, even if the message/content of the book was not so good。 I think the cassette tape recording was a cool idea, but nowhere in the book I agree with the other 1 star reviews, I can't frame my own very well but I'll try。 Not a very enjoyable book to read。 Everyone's character is shitty, the 1 star is only for the owner of Rosie's who seemed like the nicest from the entire book, and he had like 2 lines :/I think the narrative style was quite satisfying and brought the little pieces together nicely, even if the message/content of the book was not so good。 I think the cassette tape recording was a cool idea, but nowhere in the book was it really shown how messed up / twisted this was for the others。 Hannah's cassette tape recordings were portrayed as a heroic stunt。 Which it wasn't。 。。。more
